Purple Prose Slam: You Can Win a Free Editor or Agent Workshop!

As writers, we’re not supposed to smear purple prose in our manuscript. A new aspiring writer may even spend hours scrubbing their copy clean of the magenta. I know I did.

However, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Shouldn’t we have a place to let out all of our cheesy expression? After all, art should not be bound.

Here’s your chance. And you could win a free workshop with one of the industry reps listed below. Just gives us your smelliest, shabbiest, silliest metaphors, similes, and literary devices gone wrong. Hang it up in the comments section of this posting for the entire world to see. Please keep it 40 words or under and PG rated. We also ask that you be a follower of the Rock through Google or Networked blogs. Our staff will choose the entry that squirts the most interesting shade of purple on us. The winner will be announced on Chiseled in Rock March 3rd 2011. We will take entries up until March 2nd. Please enter only once.

The workshop, a precursor to the September RMFW Gold Conference in Denver, is two hours long and accommodates approximately 10 people per each facilitating industry representative. You bring a manuscript and the agent or editor gives you tips. Julie Kazimer landed a book deal with Kensington directly from one of these workshops last year. They are a great opportunity to network with a professional who knows the ins and outs of the publishing industry.

The representatives booked so far are:

Agent Molly Jaffa with Folio Literary Management

Agent Rebecca Strauss with McIntosh and Otis, Inc. Literary Agency

Agent Sara Megibow with Nelson Literary Agency

Editor LaToya Smith with Grand Central Publishing

Agent Rachelle Gardner with Wordserve Literary Agency

Jennifer Unter with the Unter Agency

Editor Brian Farrey of Flux Publishing

Marisa Iozzi Corvisiero with L Perkins Agency

And more will be announced in the next coming months!

So let’s have some fun. Although I won’t be competing, here’s something to get it started. The kid’s blond hair reminded me of a pile of gold coins that were melting thanks to the stinging yellow sun.

*The prize is for the workshop only. Getting to Denver, Colorado is the responsibility of the winner.

*Janet Fogg will return next Monday with more Pictures Are Worth A Thousand Words and the No Sunbathing photo.

Once, while on the boat in the ocean several miles out, Virgie, Nolan and John ran through fog so dense they couldn’t see the bow and it felt as if they’d been swallowed up by another dimension.

From my very first novel, which will never see the light of day...

The painting was awash of vivid swirling colors. Blue, red, black and yellow created a poem of paint, telling the story of love, lose and death reflected in his eyes.

You asked for it.

*ahem*

The black dress she wore to the funeral hung in the closet like a dark rain cloud, reminding her of the storm that threatened to erupt in her eyes.

A moment after the door clicks shut, his booted feet clonk down the sidewalk, and I can't stop the single fat tear from streaking down my cheek like snot during flu season.

And the winner is...stomp your feet in the stadium like a roar of cattle...L. G. Smith. You have won the free Editor/Agent workshop!

We should point out that it was a tough choice between LG's and Michelle's, however after a lot of consideration, we could see a character or author with a snarky attitude saying something like Michelle's entry. Chuck Palahniuk comes to mind!

Thank you, thank you. I did warn you ahead of time about the purpliness of my prose.
