Thoughts on Halloween

I wracked my brain trying to figure out a good Halloween topic for my last Tuesday post in October, but I got nothing.

The reason is simple. I hate Halloween.

I don't like witches, vampires, werewolves, goblins, trolls, or zombies.

Dressing up in costumes was bad enough when I was a kid, but having to think up and make clever costumes for my own kids was even worse.

I always cut myself when I tried to carve pumpkins for my kids, and usually messed up the creepy grin so it looked foolish instead of ghoulish.

The big bowl of candy usually ended up on my hips instead of inside the Trick or Treaters' bags.

I'm a Halloween Scrooge. Bah. Humbug!

This child understands exactly how I feel:

Pat - Oh, that video is too much! Thanks for sharing it. And it's funny; I don't hate Hallowe'en the way you, do, but I know exactly how you feel about the "creativity block" when it comes to costumes. I used to run into the same thing when my daughter was young. Fortunately my husband is very creative that way, so I was saved ;-).

I’m a Halloween Scrooge as well, especially the pumpkin carving. The kiddos get grand carving ideas when visiting the patch, but once the tops come off, I’m the one left to gunk scoop - all the guts, none of the glory! This year I boycotted pumpkins in favor of spooky, reusable lanterns – they’ll adjust!

That young lady has a career on the big screen, or should I say scream.

Funny video.

But I can't share your dislike for Halloween. I love everything about it--the costumes, the carving, the candy, the decorating and bad horror movies. I've often wished we had Halloween twice a year.

Margot, the worst thing I ever did to one of my kids was make him go as a TV set. A cardboard box on his head; one side painted to look like the screen with a test pattern.

Hi Kathryn -- Oh, I sure remember the pumpkin gunk. I tried roasting the seeds one year to make the whole project seem worthwhile... :)

Donna -- isn't she adorable? -- and I don't often say that about a screaming kidlet.

Heidi, I know other people who like Halloween too. Maybe I'm just getting old and cranky. :)

I enjoy Halloween because we never get trick-or-treaters and I get to keep the whole bag of candy for myself!

We don't get them anymore either, Alex. At least if I do buy candy, I can buy exactly what we like the most.

Funny! That's quite a scream. :) Well, i love Halloween, but i don't dress up anymore. I do have a severed hand thingy i like to wear when i answer the door to trick or treaters. Bwahahaha!

I'm glad my kids are no longer trick or treating. Raised in Europe where we didn't have Halloween, it's always been a difficult time for me to "enjoy." Plus I like candy all year round in moderation, just as I taught my kids to enjoy. That scream was horrendous.

Karen, a severed hand thingy? You are evil. LOL

Sonia, I've never understood the benefits of Trick or Treating. I do remember get sick a couple of times when I was a kid. Now that I think about it, maybe that's why I don't like the holiday.
