The Cat Who Loves Bookcases...Books, Not So Much

By Pat Stoltey

All of the bookcases in my house (five at last count) are fair game for Katie Kitten's need to make a mess and find hiding places or high perches. A couple of days ago she jumped on a shelf in my little office and shoved every single book onto the floor.

Here she is in the living room after using her paws to remove enough books so she could climb in behind them. She seems pretty satisfied with her work, doesn't she?

I took this next expression to mean I'd just better not even try to pull her out of there after she went to all that trouble.

So far, she hasn't used her teeth or claws on any of the books, so I let her have a bit of fun. It's better than having her walk across my keyboard when I'm writing.

Pat - What a great set of 'photos! It seems you have a bibliocat, and that's very neat!

My cat doesn't seem to notice that there are shelves on the bookcase if there are books on those shelves. He just ignores them. But he's impossible to keep away from my computer.

What a great cat - loves what you love...and lets you know about it.

Margot, I love the name "bibliocat." She's sure a lot of fun.

Giles, this kitten is bad enough around the desktop, but when I try to use my laptop on my lap board, she jumps up and gets between the board and my stomach and starts stretching and pushing to get the laptop away. Once she's satisfied that I've put the laptop aside, she leaves.

Jan, if you've followed the story of our "special needs" cat through her illnesses, you know how great it is to have her healthy and getting into mischief like this.

We had an older cat that hated it when I'd spend an afternoon reading. She'd give me a little time and then plant herself on my book. I always knew that it meant I had been reading long enough.

You need to clear a spot and put a little bed in there for her.

Too cute. I think Alex is on to something-- a bookshelf bed just might be the ticket.

Sara -- since I've never been a cat owner before, I'm amazed at the number of ways cats get their message across.

Alex and Kerrie -- if I fixed up a nice little bed on the shelf and used her fleece blanket, she'd get all snooty and refuse to sleep there. With her, it's mostly about the challenge...and the mess she can make. I think she's actually smirking when she sees me picking up all those books.

Cats are great, seriously. They do the most insane things and seem to think it's perfectly normal. Yours just adorable, Patricia. Such a cute little thing.

Very cute. Reminds me of my son and daughter-in-law's cat. Lillian Jackson Braun did mighty well with her cat mysteries. Planning to write one?

You're right, Marlena. And I'm sure she's also confused by our human behavior. :)

Hi Jacqueline. I'm not planning on writing a cat mystery, at least not yet.

What great photos! I agree with the bookshelf bed, but I'd make sure that the genres you have nearby are to her liking. Sounds kind of picky.

How adorable. Cats are curious creatures, and yours is obviously very clever too.
