Event! Event! Writing and Publishing a Novel: From Idea to ISBN

Rocky Mountain Fiction Writer's all-day education workshop is coming soon!

Writing and Publishing a Novel: From Idea to ISBN

Saturday May 18, 2013 - 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
Table Mountain Inn, 1310 Washington Ave., Golden, CO
Presented by Jess Lourey, Author

Join author and creative writing professor Jess Lourey as she teaches the Pyramid on Point method, a seven-step process for turning an idea into a novel in under six months. Topics covered include: writing memorable characters, building a page-turning plot, creating cinematic, multi-purpose settings, crafting a scene, editing effectively, and finding an agent. The workshop will be a mixture of lecture and in-class writing with time for questions. Bring your ideas as well as something to write with and on.

Jess Lourey is the author of the Lefty-nominated Murder-by-Month mysteries set in Battle Lake, Minnesota, and featuring amateur sleuth, Mira James. Jess has been teaching writing and sociology at the college level since 1998.

When not raising her wonderful kids, teaching, or writing, you can find her gardening, traveling, and navigating the niceties and meanities of small-town life. She is a member of Sisters in Crime, The Loft, and Lake Superior Writers, and serves on the national board of Mystery Writers of America.

She has worked at Kramer Books in Washington, DC, and more recently, Terri owned and operated Booked For Murder Mystery Bookstore in Madison, Wisconsin.

Get a one-on-one critique from Terri: For an additional $25, the first fourteen registrants who request it, will be invited to send to Terri the first 20 pages of their work-in-progress ahead of time. Terri will read the submissions before the event and will then spend twenty minutes with the individual writer, critiquing the pages. Mark Stevens was raised in Massachusetts. He’s been a Coloradoan since 1980. He’s a former print reporter, national news television producer and school district communicator. He’s now working as a communications consultant in the new economy, listed under “s” for self-employed. Stevens has published two Colorado-based mysteries, Antler Dust (2007) and Buried by the Roan (2011), set in western Colorado’s Flat Tops Wilderness Area. Both are published by People’s Press (Aspen, Colorado). Antler Dust was a Denver Post best-seller in 2007 and 2009. Buried by the Roan has received terrific reviews from The Grand Junction Sentinel, Durango Herald and High Country News, among others. “Flat out terrific,” said New York Times best-selling author Margaret Coel. The third book in the Allison Coil Mystery Series is under production and tentatively slated for release in 2013. Mark’s author web site: www.writermarkstevens.com

Shannon Baker has a right brain/left brain conflict. While the left brain focuses on her business career, her right brain concocts thrillers. A lover of mountains, plains, oceans and rivers, she can often be found traipsing around the great outdoors. Tainted Mountain, the first in her Nora Abbott Mystery Series, is set in Flagstaff, AZ, where she lived for several years and worked for The Grand Canyon Trust, a hotbed of environmentalists who, usually, don’t resort to murder. It involves man-made snow on sacred peaks, uranium mining in the Grand Canyon, kachinas, murder, and a woman determined to make some sense of it all. She lived twenty years in the Nebraska Sandhills, where cattle outnumber people by more than 50:1, inspiring the setting for Ashes of the Red Heifer. Shannon now makes her home in Boulder, CO. Surprisingly, Nora followed her and the next book in the series is set in this beautiful location. Shannon’s author web site: http://shannonbaker.wordpress.com

Marne Ann Kirk grew up wild, running and exploring the vast high deserts and mountains of Idaho, Montana, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado with her family. She loved making up stories and, well, lied about almost everything. Thankfully, she grew out of the lying stage...now she calls it story-telling. If she wasn't making her own adventures, she was reading. Marne Ann has six amazing kids and two fantabulous grandsons who rock her world and keep her on her toes. She also has two Shih-Tzus, Thor and Loki, who are complete brats, but keep her lap warm when she writes. She loves to write. She loves the mountains, but in a perfect world she would spend a few months a year on the beach. Preferably in Mexico or Jamaica. She has two books out and a third one on the way. Love Chosen: Book One of The Fae Dragon Chronicles is a fantasy romance about dragons, magic and the evils of bigotry. Goddess on the Run, is book one of the Holy Water Warriors’ Tales, a paranormal romance series complete with goddesses and monsters, good and evil, living in and among us. Love Dared: Book Two of The Fae Dragon Chronicles, will be on the shelves on April 15th, 2013.
